It seems this script ought to be useful to the teaching of history, southwest regional issues and points-of-interest, general science, earth science, astronomy, economics, ecology, home economics, as well as, obviously, reading, writing, and theater. It could also be used to provoke thought and discussion.
However, it remains for bold, energetic teachers to test the script/website in the classroom. Feedback is welcome. The author can incorporate recommendations into the website and play. What educational standards seem best addressed by this vehicle? What should the play’s website content be, whether already existing or composed by you. Etc, etc.
Pushing what might be considered the usual limits of theater, the author, in seeking to demonstrate the broad applicability of the medium, created a trial math lesson plan for the math naysayers (lyrics) in your crowd, and added math problems to a few of the website’s early “script notes” to suggest that theatrically inspired interest even in as unlikely a subject as math is possible. (After clicking the link, just scroll down the right margin to click on “Lesson plans.” Then click on the first one: “Energy and Enterprise.”) This scenario has students read the play as any other student would , then insert the phrase School Daze into the site’s Search Box to produce the list of notes incorporating math problems (these being the last four notes in the list). From there on it’s the teacher’s game. (This lesson plan may be of especial interest to NAU students enrolled in ETC 547 which calls for *the creation of instructional material utilizing online resources, and *presenting such creation using the same format as you view the sample in. – However, the author cordially invites any ETC program enrollees as well as any other teachers to try out this script/website.)
The hope of course is that a vehicle such as this can prove useful enough to warrant being eventually offered as part of the standard teaching kit.
