First A Bomb: San Antonio, New Mexico

Don’t ask me how or why, but way back when I saw the opera Doctor Atomic. It dramatises misgivings Manhattan Project researcher Edward Teller and Project Director Robert Oppenheimer had when Teller thought maybe an atomic bomb might ‘ignite’ the atmosphere when it exploded. Sine put a link in this note that tells about it.

SINE

I read about this project. They were concerned, and I'm quoting: “…a hypothetical fusion reaction of nitrogen nuclei [might produce a chain reaction.] A report Teller co-authored showed that ignition of the atmosphere was not impossible, just unlikely.” (E. Konopinski; C. Marvin; Edward Teller (declassified Feb. 1973). "Ignition of the Atmosphere with Nuclear Bombs" (PDF). Retrieved on 10/6/2008.)”

So the first atomic bomb was July 16th, 1945 at Trinity Site, 12 miles east of San Antonio, New Mexico, off U.S. Highway 380. We were lucky to be passing by on our way to the missile launch site Coronado told us about in the beginning. They have tours just two times per year: first Saturday of April and October. But you must contact the Alamagordo Chamber of Commerce (505-437-6120) or White Sands Missile Range Public Affairs Office to do it. (505-678-1134) Very interesting.

La de da. It's true our thing is an audio script, but it's also in print, and here's a bit of fun  (lyrics) those who skip reading aren't going to get.
