In the good old days of Gorbachev's glasnost, the US and Russia started on the U.S. space station in 1997. They planned to connect the U.S. space station Alpha to the modified Russian Mir space station. Connecting required 19 American shuttle launches and 12 Russian boosters. Amazing planning together. More amazing it happened. Good reason to be an optimist.
