Spices as technology

CORONADO

In places where it gets cold outside, learning that food lasts longer when it’s cold seems like a no brainer discovery which is probably what led to making ice houses to store it, then ice boxes, then yadayadaya, okay? I’d call preserving food by refrigeration technology, wouldn’t you? The thing is, if you’re in the tropics and hope to keep some food from rotting, I’d call it a more impressive technological feat to discover that spices can preserve food. And the tropics is where most of the spices we know about grow. I don’t know how much of that is just coincidence or if there was a little selective breeding of spices going on among the people trying to preserve their food.
