First Spaniard to touch No. America (at Florida)

CORONADO

Bernard L. Fontana, Entrada, (Tucson: Southwest Parks and Monuments Association, 1994), pp. 12-16

summarizes how Juan Ponce de Leon explored both sides of the Florida peninsula in 1512-13 under contract from the King of Spain... At the age of 19, he’d been on Columbus’ second voyage, and participated in the conquest of Hispaniola, the island where Haiti and the Dominican Republic are in the Carribean. This must have worked out pretty well for him, as he was able to outfit his Florida expedition out of his own pocket.
