Chaco Canyon, NM

AURA

A visit to the Chaco Canyon area reveals a number of 10th to 12th century multi-story communities where all living quarters are part of a single structure with common grounds. This painting by Lloyd K. Townsend is a well-researched though still hypothetical view of what we call Pueblo Bonito. (We don’t know what the builders called it.) The man who excavated it called it one of the largest apartment houses in the world to that time and estimated it housed 1200 people. It’s a little farther north than halfway between Flagstaff and Albuquerque. There’s a visitor center there and a few links in this note you can check out. There’s way too much for me to go into right here. You’ll just have to read about it if it sounds interesting.
