Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop, Olathe, KS
——Last stop on the Santa Fe Trail
CORONADO
So. Sine. Did you stop at Mahaffie House on your way out here?
SINE
I don’t know. What is it.
CORONADO
Oh, you would know if you’d stopped there. It’s the only stage and wagon stop left on the Santa Fe Trail that’s open to the public. It’s in Olathe, Kansas, where the Santa Fe Trail and Oregon Trail ran together for a ways, 1100 North Kansas City Rd., Olathe. The Trail remnants in Olathe are marked for public viewing. You couldn’t have missed it if you’d been there. Just outside of Kansas City.
SINE
I did not drive through Olathe. I don't think I drove through Kansas. Is that a state?
CORONADO
Well you missed it, man. You’re gonna have to go back. Here. I’ll give you a few links about it. I haven’t been there myself, but you might want to read up on it.
SINE
You. You're from Kansas, you said.
CORONADO
True, true.
SINE
I will talk about this with you later, when we are alone, with nobody listening.
CORONADO
Aren’t you gonna’ thank me for the links?
SINE
Very funny.
CORONADO
Come on man. Lighten up. After what I told you about the trail of tears, I’m trying to put you in a better mood. And our audience. And Mahaffie House is a real thing. It actually is the last stagecoach stop still standing on the Santa Fe Trail. By the way, I want to tell you the right time to see Mahaffie House is in summer when we can go to Prairie Center that’s also in Olathe, Kansas so you can see how high the grass can grow that the bison were just crazy about: 12 feet high. But as far as cowboys and Indians go, Dodge City is it.
